The maker movement can build nearly everything around intelligence—boards, enclosures, firmware, harnesses, fixtures, repairs, and design files—yet the dense fast active fabric still arrives from a distant fab.

Brian Greenforest names that missing capability and defines the next frontier: makers must fabricate their own fast active devices, not only design and package them.

Complete the Open-Hardware Stack

An active device must provide gain, restoration, fanout, repeatable switching, useful density, and a process that builders can measure and control. Those properties turn passive materials into scalable logic.

Without that layer, every open board still depends on closed packaged intelligence. Local active-device fabrication would make the complete machine reproducible.

Build the Fab That Fits a Community

The path joins materials, deposition or printing, patterning, annealing, interconnect, probing, characterization, yield, and circuit education inside accessible equipment.

Makerspaces, universities, device physicists, process engineers, and funders can establish the first complete workflow. Build the active element locally and open the frontier beyond silicon dependency.

The maker movement can build almost everything around intelligence. The board. The enclosure. The firmware. The harness. The test rig. The repair manual. The design files. But not the dense fast active fabric that intelligence runs on. That is the missing maker fab. Open hardware will remain partial until makers can fabricate their own fast active devices. Not merely design them. Not merely order them. Not merely package them. Fabricate them. That is the next real frontier.
