The Missing Maker Fab

Open hardware can own many layers of a machine. The missing layer is a local path to fast active devices that can be fabricated, measured, repaired, improved, and taught.

The boundary is not open-source design. The boundary is active behavior. A community can publish schematics, HDL, boards, firmware, enclosures, fixtures, and test procedures while still depending on remote silicon for the fast nonlinear devices that make the machine run.

The missing maker fab is the process that moves that active behavior closer to builders.

Not merely design them.
