Valves, gates, and switches regulate a flow by letting one condition control another. That visible cause-and-effect relationship supplies the foundation for logic, state, and machines that combine many choices.

A Valve Gives Control a Physical Form

Long before electronic computers, a gate or valve let one action regulate another flow. Open it and material moves. Close it and the path stops. The mechanism exposes its cause and consequence directly.

A switch carries the same relationship into logic. A control input selects which route can influence the output. Combine many such selections and regulation grows into computation.

This starting point matters because every later abstraction still needs a physical path, a controlling condition, and a result that changes.
